Using a spring needle only, without a foot is dangerous. The foot will protect you much more than an open needle. I've used one before, but I don't recommend one unless your specific machine does NOT have a darning/embroidery foot available for purchase. And about 95% of machines have that option.
Very true...too much of a chance of sewing into your finger...unless it is your only option, a foot is much better for machine quilting.
