I saw the start. It did turn out beautifully. Have you tried a smaller binding. I put a thickness of painters tape to run the edge of my quilt and the binding along side. It helps me more easily get the binding sewn on straight without working really hard. It is my best tip to all those having problems with bindings. I am self taught too. But these days there is so much on DVD's and on You tube. To me it looks just perfect. But as quilters we tend to be too hard on ourselves.
