They make fusible iron on tape so you don't have to sew it together. I've done that way only. It works very well. I've never sewed it together, so I don't know how easy that is. The fusing is pretty darn easy.
I use a looooooooong whip stitch, close to 3/4 of an inch, simply butting the two pieces together------------NOT TIGHT! The later quilting will secure the batting so an easy stitch works great. For me--------the hand stitching is easier than machine stitching.
