I would go thrift stores and see if you can get any aloha shirts. There's usually at least a yard of useable fabric. Make sure you look for the cotton, not rayon ones.
Also, since there are 2 girls making the quilts, look for sale fabrics and buy half yard pieces. You can also go to Fabric.Com They will sell a 1/2 yard of fabric from their non-clearance selections.
