The trend today, with the kids is towards simplicity. I like the idea that the eye will have two places to land and consider, both the quilted block and the design block. I vote for two.

Not quite sure how old your son and soon to be DIL....but I have found when I make a quilt in my opinion is pretty...some of my daughters will pipe in "mom it's beautiful but too busy"....on that note I would have to say the second one....they are all very beautiful
