Thank you everyone. I decided to leave it as is and have it sandwiched with a russet/red print backer that seems to harmonize well but wasn't too expensive (I usually use sheets but didn't have anything suitable). I'll use batiks for binding -- maybe a bit wider binding than I usually do.
The "pattern" came from a post on this site. I'll see if I can find it. All you do is cut 6-1/2" x 10-1/2" rectangles and edge the long side with 2-1/2" black strips. Then turn each block a quarter turn to sew together. I cut the batiks 6-1/2" WOF, the black 2-1/2" WOF. Sewed then cut into 10-1/2" segments. Very easy, very quick, but the results are elegant. I'm a fan of disappearing nine patch for a quick quilt, but this one has become my new favourite.
