I had the same thing happen once. I added prairie points (adjusted to the size to accommodate the size required which made them each about 2" long).
Here's what I did. I nested the prairie points just a little bit and basted them together to the needed length for each side. I then basted them to the lower end of the binding (on the front side). Finally, I added a strip of large rick-rack on top of the points and sewed them into place. (This was a "girly" quilt so the rick rack worked perfectly, but you could use something else.) The points were secured and the desired length was acheived. It really didn't take long and I liked the final look.
