I made mine in red, white and blue. Any colors look nice. My quilt was donated to Miracle Quilts for wounded soldiers of Oxford MI.
Fabric Requirements:
Color 1 & 2 (my red & blue) ¾ yard each
Color 3 (star background, corner squares, and sashing) 2 ¼ yard
Color 4 (my navy, snowball corners and sashing cornerstones) 3/4 yard
Borders ¾ yard
Cutting instructions for 4 big star blocks:
10” squares – 8 red, 8 white, 8 blue
6 ½” squares – 16 white
5” squares – 16 solid navy
2 ½” squares - 9 solid navy (cornerstones)
2 ½” x 24 ½” strips – 10 pieces cut from 7 width of fabric strips for sashing.
(Join all 7 strips before cutting into 24 ½” lengths)
4 ½” wide borders cut from 6 width of fabric strips. (Join all 6 strips before cutting)
Method:
Sew ¼” seams around the outside of pairs of 10” squares.
Blue/Red, Blue/White, Red/White (you will have 2 sets of each color combination for each big star)
Cut diagonally twice on all blocks.
Press open and square up to 6 ½”
Handle blocks gently as they have bias edges.
Stitch the 5” navy squares to one corner of each of the white 6 ½” diagonally. (Snowball)
Press toward the corner, trim.
Assemble into 4 large stars as shown in the diagram. Start with the center, make a pinwheel. Then place blue/white and red/white squares to extend the arms of the star. Lastly, place the white/navy snowball squares in the corners. Join into rows, and then join rows matching corners of blocks.
Add the 24 ½” strips as sashing to the large stars and use the 2 ½” navy squares as the corner stones. The sashing is important as it will stabilize the bias edges of the stars.
After the 4 stars are joined together, measure through the center of the quilt top to obtain the measurement for the borders. Attach the side borders, and then do the same for the top and bottom borders.
