I agree with the advice to look for vintage. You get a lot better machine for your money if your budget is limited. I have machines from treadles to a long arm. One of my favorites to piece on is a 1948 straight stitch Class 66 Singer. You can't beat the way it sews those straight quarter inch seems. Check craigslist, shopgoodwill.com, and let people know you're looking. The right machine will come along! Most vintage machines go for $40 to $50 at the most and are a steal! Good luck!
