the stitch you describe can be done on any machine. the trick is in the tension settings. the top tension has to be set tight so that the bobbin thread is drawn to the top. you might want to make note of your normal tensions before you start experimenting.
On my machine, there is a stitch that is specifically for this. It kind of looks like it doubles back every other stitch to make it stand out more, then I do also adjust the tension so the bobbin comes through even more.
Babylock has a Sashiko machine that only uses bobbin so it looks exactly like a hand stitch on top. On back it's a running stitch though. Of course, that's the only stitch that machine does and it retails for around 2k, but it sure does that stitch well.
