On my machine, there is a stitch that is specifically for this. It kind of looks like it doubles back every other stitch to make it stand out more, then I do also adjust the tension so the bobbin comes through even more.

Babylock has a Sashiko machine that only uses bobbin so it looks exactly like a hand stitch on top. On back it's a running stitch though. Of course, that's the only stitch that machine does and it retails for around 2k, but it sure does that stitch well.
