My niece makes these and uses barley in hers. She has had great success with hers. I am going to make one shortly.
I too, use "pearl barley" purchased at the bulk food store. My DH loves them & uses them daily BUT so far, we have not "nuked" them, he uses them from the freezer for cold packs. I am sure they would work equally as well in the microwave.
