The needle size is very interchangeable. I have used anywhere from a 4 to a 10. The size of the loops will help determine size. I also have cast on only 5 stitches to make a very long skinny scarf. This is a fun scarf to knit and a huge hit! Made over a dozen different ones for xmas. Enjoy
