I've had that problem and i change the size of the end cap that slides onto the spool holder to keep the spool in place. the smaller one i use with very skinny spools of thread, the larger cap I use with regular spools of thread. that way the thread glides over the cap and not the spool end itself. i too hate those slits in the spool ends that can catch thread.
