Long arm quilters often discourage the use of sheets because the tight cotton weave can throw their tension out of whack...I honestly have never tried on my domestic but I know people do. Probably the worst that will happen is you'll go through a lot of needles.

I was given a partially quilted quilt to finish for a person and it already had a sheet as the backing. I machine quilted it on my domestic machine without any problem. Others are correct about the tight weave of sheeting. Would be very difficult to hand quilt but I didn't notice any problem with my domestic machine. Good luck and I'm certain you will be pleased with the results.
