According to Superior Threads, you should put all spools on the machine vertically. Sometimes it won't matter, but putting it on horizontally adds an extra twist to the thread as it comes off the spool and that can cause breakage.

Cones should also be vertical on a thread stand according to this, but they unwind from the top.
