Well, the up side is when this happens, it just takes a tug to remove all the stitching. This is really why you want to redo it. Although washng the finished quilt (assuming that you used cotton batting)will draw it up somewhat, it won't be nearly enough to compensate and you will run the risk of your quilting coming loose.
