I do it this way all the time, for years now and have never had any issues with it.
Tammy, I am working on your pattern! Yes, it is raw edge appliqué. The hands turned out ok, but the hair is bunching up. I started the letters tonight and it is going SLOWLY. For my first try at appliqué it is fun. I am learning on the fly. Shower is in 10 days! I thought I had two months!
