It can be anything you want. This is your project.

Here is one that I did. I used three different dark forest greens in the compass and the highlights were a blue and green batik. For the corner points, I used the three greens and added two others. An additional dark green was used as the border (my floor is dark so you really have to look hard to see the border). My background was a light celery colored batik with a faint design.

I had fun doing it When I got to the curves pieces (on mine they are the pieces between the on point center and the corner points ans well as the small curved pieces in the corners) - I cut them larger that what is called for - then trimmed them to size after completing the corners. That was the only tricky part for me and as I used the celery batik - I bought extra to gove me that flexibility
