That's my thought also, but maybe use a medium blue from the stripe and then use QuiltnNan's idea of appliqueing birds on a branch from the blue onto the stripe.
I also like the idea of adding some other birds...maybe a yellow finch to bring in the yellow from the strip or a robin signifying the beginning of spring after winter? Good luck and please post after you finish - we will all be waiting to see the creativity emerge =)
