Jan, better you than me! I do not like the striped border at all! That said, you might find a mottled red print and use it to make the quilt square again; get rid of the wonky sides. Then, I would fuse cardinals or a tree with green branches to the new border, allowing it to spread out in whatever direction you want. I don't think the quilt is useable as is.
