I just got my first sewing machine for Christmas this year so I'm definitely not the best source of information, but we bought a solid wood dining table (rectangular, about 5ft long and 3ft wide) from Walmart for $100 that I'm using and it's been great so far. I didn't expect to have so much working surface but it has worked out well for me. Bonus - it looks nice and can double as an extra table when we have too many guests for our normal dining set
