I have done the same thing only I cut out of contact paper. No need to iron and no residue left behing. Be sure to get a contrasting color for easier viewing. I tried it once with mickey mouse (hey! it was on SALE!) on a busy fabric and I could not see well.. You can also draw you design on tracing paper (Golden threads paper works well for this) , pin your paper on the fabric and stitch on the line. After you pull the paper off , leaving your design behind. Don't forget to post pictures!
