I had purchased some thrift store ties to experiment with before cutting up the real ties. I tried spray starch using two applications. Then I carefully sewed three different weights/ hand together. I was pleasantly surprised. Since I only used the starch on the back, would I still need to wash the quilt when it's finished? I'd rather not.

I also found a piece of lightweight knit pellon I had that was years old and it didn't stick very well. Maybe too old?
