When embroidery machines first came out they only had a 4x4 hoop. There were instructions on how to split a really large design, mark and move hoop. They did whole jacket backs that way. Someone did a full American Eagle on a jacket. Now you can have your software split the file - add a jump or marking stitch to line up on and keep going.

Pfaff's continuous hoop designs work that way, and using that technique with the placement stitch I have split large Babylock designs and used the Grand Hoop, which you reverse rather than rehoop.

Marking templates are still available.
