I wanted to learn to quilt after spreading out a quilt that my grandmother made and listening to my dad say, "That's George's shirt, Mama made an apron out of that one, that was my favorite shirt ...". They were all gone when he told me about the fabrics, but the memories lived on in that quilt. I don't use clothing to make my quilts, but my scrappy quilt gave me the same feeling. I could see the quilts I had made for other people in the quilt. I saw a scrap from Emily's quilt, one from my DGD's quilt, one from my son's quilt ... AND there were no rules and no seams that absolutely had to match unless I chose to match them.
