I used to use a dab of glue to hold the piece in place as I appliqued it down, then cut the back and pull the paper out. I quit doing it that way. I use the freezer paper to cut templates, iron them to my fabric, trace around them with a fine mechanical pencil then remove the paper. I dab glue to the applique piece and needle turn. Each paper template can be used till it wears out.
