Do you mean for satin stitch applique? For invisible machine applique people usually use 3mm monofilament or silk thread. For blanket stitch applique, I have use two strands of embroidery cotton. For satin stitch, I personally have used rayon thread that I get on big cones from a warehouse outlet; I'm not sure what others use for satin stitch applique.
