Hmmmmm. I think that one of the problems is that the man at the repair shop is NOT an OSMG (Old Sewing Machine Guy). Joe is correct, the hand wheel is turned away from you to begin sewing and a picture of your machine would help. Do you have a manual for your sewing machine? I have a White Family Rotary, serial number FR3002495 and it was made in 1923.
I agree with Caroline, a picture would be nice. I know you need to have the needle 15x1 facing right, the bobbin placed and threaded right and clicked in a little tricky at first but once it in the proper position and remember the whell like Joe said Wheel turns the opposite they sew like a dream.
