My mother made bread pudding with same ingredients to your mother's except for the molasses. It was firm and not very sweet. We would serve it cold with a drizzle of pancake syrup. I never asked for her recipe either. This Cooks. com recipe looks like it would be similar to my mother's. MOLASSES BREAD PUDDING
Printed from COOKS.COM

10 slices stale bread, cubed
2 eggs
3 tbsp. molasses
2 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
2 c. milk, scalded
2 tbsp. butter, melted

Arrange bread cubes in well GREASED baking dish. Beat together eggs, molasses, sugar and salt. Add milk and butter. Pour over bread cubes. Bake in moderate oven at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until firm. Serve cold with milk or cream.
