I'm a bread pudding "addict". The one my mom used to make was also very firm. You could slice it and hold it in your hand to eat. Like you, I never asked her for the recipe.
Someone mentioned Paula Deen. She has a chocolate bread pudding recipe that I like a lot and have made several times. I am not a fan of "custardy" bread pudding.
