You can do crazy patch blocks and decorate them with your fancy stitches. If you look on www.quilterscache.com there might be a crazy patch block? Sew the blocks together and cut your egg shape. If you didn't put any batt in between the layers you old probably do the fancy stitches right through to the back but would you want to? That's a lot of thread ends to bury.
Any scrap square would work even the strip ones that Jenny Doan has just posted for Missouri Star Quilt Co.
