This looks to me like a Stack and Slash type of block. Just stack 6 fifferent colors together and slash into 6 different sections. There is a demo on you tube using 4 pieces of fabric, but it will give you an idea if you have never seen it before.

Carole, now that you mention this, I looked a bit closer and it does look like there is a pattern to the madness and this is a Stack and Slash block repeated over and over, sewn together and an egg shape cut out!! Might have to rethink my method of creation. Maybe try both and see which one I like better....
