I'm not quite sure what you are asking, but will try answering. I have a Brother machine and quilting in the hoop is all I've been doing lately. If I am doing all applique type quilting, I hoop batting and a base fabric which has an iron-on stabilizer. Actually, I get the very light weight iron on knit interfacing from JoAnn's and love the way it works. I have also used a very inexpensive light weight muslin as a base, hooping it and the batting with the base fabric on top.
If you are asking about placing a nearly finished quilt in the hoop to do the quilting, that I have not tried but have read that you might hoop a water soluble stabilizer and lay the quilt on top rather than hooping.
If you want to try applique in the hoop, I would highly recommend Molly Mine designs. She does some really cute stuff and every design I have used from her has been perfect!
