If I have a wavy border I sew dart in it where the fullness is before sewing it to the quilt. It's almost invisible. A prize winning quilter at Paducah told me how to do that.
I use to sew over pins until the needle hit one just right and it did a lot of damage to the machine. The timing went out and the bobbin case got all messed up. The needle jammed but didn't break and fly out.
