I agree that Disappearing Nine Patch would be a good choice. It can be scrappy, but it can also be controlled. The look changes depending on your placement of fabrics. The outside corners are not cut, so these larger pieces are often the focus fabric. The center of the nine-path is cut twice, making the piece smaller, so this is often the accent fabric.
