I just took a course on curves. No pinning. Lay your main piece on the machine with your curvy piece on top. Take 2 - 3 stitches then hold your curved piece up & slightly to the right. It follows along your 1/4" foot like a dream. At the end you hold the curved piece up with a tweezers, still slightly to the right.
