No. 1 is more like a traditional Irish Chain, except for the one block with 5 black squares. When the quilt is done, the colored squares should make a line from one corner to the next all across the entire quilt. But I love the different colored squares in No. 1. With the background and four of the block squares the same, the lines will show up when it is finished. You are using beautiful colors!
I also like #1 with care to make all the outside corners and middle square to be the "colors" to establish a continuous chain. I think the contrast on black would be spectacular. Less dramatic, but soft and nice would be a white or light ivory background...more wedding-ish??? Depends on what they like. Good luck. It will be beautiful.
