A scroll saw goes up and down (like the old hand held COPING SAW). I works just fine for me because I have done a lot of woodworking and have learned how to control cutting a straight line. Mine was a tiny bit wavy but I use sandpaper wrapped around a long flat board to sand out any high or low places.
