The sharpening stone is placed on the B/W spindle.
To my understanding the second spool pin is used in winding the bobbins.
Yes, the same needles (DBX1 AKA 16x231) can be used for most transverse shuttle machines. The exception is the Singer 12, it doesn't like anything except the 12x1 needle.

Wouldn't the same needles that you recommended to me work in the Phoenix too? I have a feeling they are both of the same time period, as the top of my machine's case looks a lot like the one pictured above.
