Since you are a beginner and material is hard to come by, a good quality flat sheet would be great to use. My Aunt used them for years. Also the sheets now have higher thread count in many. I know many people say don't use them, but I have and never had an issue. As you know we wash our sheets more often then our quilts, so many can take the wear and tear.
