For the fabric - first you sort it into two piles: darker, vivid fabrics in one pile and lighter softer colored fabrics in the other. Then you take each pile and as best you can (it's better if it isn't perfect) sort it into 4 main color groups. That is what makes up the quadrants of each diamond.
The hardest part of making this quilt was prewashing and then heavily starching, air drying and ironing each piece of fabric before cutting it. That took quite awhile! You need to starch like that because the diamonds are cut on the bias and the starch helps them not to stretch when you sew the halves together.
I will have to put that movie on my list. Thanks for your detailed reply. This definitely has to go on my "someday" list!
