Just remember that if you have nothing between the layers, you will have more of a challenge to get good tension. (not to scare you...just prepare you!). The stitches twist between the layers, no layers, less area to twist. How about a thin, 'airy-er' batt? It will give it a bit of poof..but not much thickness/warmth.
