I can only imagine how hard that decision was for you and your family. When my sister moved Dad to an assisted living facility a couple of years ago, she asked him what he wanted in his room. He wanted a blanket he remembered and pictures of the two wonderful women he married (my mother and stepmom). Having a few things he knew and could remember helped him settle in so quickly.
