i think you need to talk to the customer...ask if she plans on the quilt being (used) laundered- treated like a baby quilt- layed on the floor for baby to lay on...spit up on...
or if she would like it to be one that will probably be put away- maybe taken out once in a while to be shown off...
i've gone (over-board) a bit on a couple quilts in the past and had people who were not necessarily unhappy with it...but not really pleased either---it made the quilt something they did not intend...and then they felt the need to make a new one to (replace) the one that was "over the top" ...before assuming you should get a little input- even if you want to surprise her- although a wonderful (thought) it can backfire. I had one lady say to me....'i don't see why you couldn't just do something nice & simple- it was a nice, simple quilt---it wasn't for a show or something'...she was really unhappy---and i was a little (hurt)...
and i made kid;s quilts for a few family members that i thought the kids would really enjoy...the parents insisted on putting them 'away' to save...for what i don't understand...they show them every now & then...but the kids have never been able to play on them...which is what i made them for.
