Fear of the unknown drives many of the 'elitist' attitudes. Some folks don't know how to machine quilt, don't want to learn and therefore elevate themselves and their hand work above others.
In my opinion, whatever method of sewing/quilting you like to do best is the 'best' method for you. The opinions of others are not important to your work, nor to the reception given your work by the recipients!
