It might not look quite as clean as stitching to the front and hand-sewing to the back, but if your stitches are neat and/or you use a decorative stitch, it can be quite attractive.
Unless it is an heirloom quilt - use a nice decorative stitch or blind or straight nice and even - your thread color may make a huge difference. This is my preferred way on children's quilts.
