I love receiving hand made gifts. My daughter doesn't sew, however, she does make crafts and I will receive various craft gifts, which I really appreciate, since I know the amount of time that goes into making it. Until her passing, my sister and I usually exchanged handmade gifts. The mother of my DDIL always makes something - she crochets, plus she cans and preserves various jams, jellies, pickles, etc., which are graciously accepted - she makes the best strawberry-rhubarb jam. I will make various quilted items for her and my DS and DDIL, along with my DGD and they always seem to be appreciated. Usually when I hear "Oh you can make that yourself" it comes from my DH when I wish to purchase items at a craft fair. I know I can make it, but sometimes you just want to buy it. To me handmade gifts are a gesture of love.
