I found Karen Mctavish's "Elemental Quilting" and "Curved Crosshatching" books to be VERY helpful when I designed my first wholecloth quilt by the way. I too tried out some longarms at a show last year and decided I like quilting on my Juki better!

Your practice piece is quite lovely and certainly worth hanging; I love the depth you created with your designs! Can't wait to see a wholecloth from you!!!
