I agree that you probably need a different needle. The wrong needle size as well as wear can cause fraying. I love Aurifil thread 50 wt, and it's all I use for piecing. For machine quilting on my DSM I use Aurifil 50 wt in the bobbin and Superior Threads King Tut for the top. I do a lot of detailed fmq and I like my top thread to show more.
I buy my Aurifil from Fabric.com for $10.98 a spool and free shipping over $35, plus sales tax to some states. You can also buy it on Amazon.com. Thread will still come from Fabric.com with the same free shipping and (at least for now) you don't pay sales tax to Amazon.
