I can see both ways of making that block, but honestly I think the easier way would be to make 4 small blocks into one large block, like this:
[ATTACH=CONFIG]414173[/ATTACH] [ATTACH=CONFIG]414174[/ATTACH]
I'm curious as to why you'd rather make the block with a solid center square?
